You are not alone. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have a sleep or wakefulness disorder. NHLBI also reports that about 1 in 3 adults do not regularly get enough uninterrupted sleep. Why does it matter? Chronically shortened sleep quality creates noticeable health issues over time, such as insulin resistance, poorer immune function, lowered pain tolerance, and emotional dysregulation.

Using acupuncture to promote sleep.

Historically, acupuncture has been used to help with pain relief, stress reduction, and overall wellness. Emerging research suggests acupuncture may have a role in boosting sleep quality and duration. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 56 randomized controlled trials looking at acupuncture and primary insomnia. The researchers found that acupuncture was associated with significant improvements in sleep quality and insomnia severity compared with placebo-style acupuncture.

“Sleep is one of those things we tend to take for granted until we can’t get it. We see people who are exhausted, but whose minds and nervous systems just won’t settle down,” says Dr. Jann Turpin. “This research supports something I see in my practice consistently. With targeted acupuncture therapy, we can help chronic sleep problems diminish, which increases the duration of quality sleep.”

“A lot of people who struggle with sleep feel like they just can’t turn their brains off. That’s where acupuncture can be really helpful,” Dr. Jann explains. “We’re working with the nervous system to help the body move out of that stressed, alert state and into a more relaxed state that supports sleep. It’s amazing to see the difference when someone finally feels like their body knows how to rest again.”

For people struggling with chronic sleep problems, those findings are significant. They also add to a growing body of research examining how acupuncture may influence the nervous system and the body's ability to move from a heightened state of alertness toward relaxation.

“Acupuncture gives us another way to help the body move out of that heightened state and into a place of relaxation,” says Dr. Jann. “It’s validating to see newer research showing acupuncture is great for insomnia and sleep quality, because it supports what we see with our patients.”
Don't wait for a better night of sleep. Acupuncture can help.
